4 Nexus with Android 4.4 official KitKat: video test TuttoAndroid - Everything Android

Into finally arrived! KitKat Android 4.4 was released during the last night on the Nexus 4 via factory image. You can go to the relevant article if you also want to update your smartphone just by installing the image of the official system.

Android 4.4 on the Nexus 4 KitKat we told you about in a previous video preview, when we installed a ROM porting the Nexus 5. In essence, not much has changed with respect to the custom ROM, but rather to highlight all the various news we have divided the article for arguments.

Performance and RAM

Into Do you notice any particular differences between Android 4.3 and Android 4.4 Jelly Bean KitKat level of performance, then the smartphone is equally fast though slightly more fluid (this is just a pittance) compared to the previous version of Android, aided by the fact that Android 4.4 has been optimized to run on devices with on-board also 512 MB of RAM.

Into Speaking of RAM, it seems that these optimizations are felt long. Just installed the factory image, the memory occupied RAM was only 375 MB. There is, however, to consider that this value we just viewed during the download and recovery of applications and system settings. Once installed all applications and the device used intensively, employment of RAM is almost doubled and, at rest, will reach 705 MB. To keep in mind that this amount of RAM occupied is related to as many as 12 open applications, namely: Google Maps, Google Currents, Settings, Hangouts, Play Store, Gmail, Google Search, GT Racing 2, Google Chrome, First Train, Mega and Feedly. Closing these applications, the RAM consumption settles on 590 MB.

interface and functions

Launcher

Into The launcher is not what we saw on the Nexus 5 during our video-review, as for now, Google has chosen not to make it available on other Nexus. This means that despite Android 4.4 KitKat supports the transparent rods, these are black as not supported by the launcher of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean present on Nexus 4. The background you can then edit it in the same way as they did with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the same goes for the widgets and enter to open applications.

Quick Settings

Into The Quick Settings remain nearly unchanged, as they are only updated the icons have been updated colors and was added to the Quick Setting for Geolocation, you still can not edit them.

Home

Into Home When setting you can choose the default launcher to use. This setting is shown only after you install an alternative launcher.

Audio

Into System sounds have been changed and are now much more full-bodied and pleasant.

Touch & Pay

When setting Into Touch & Pay shows the applications for payments via NFC. This item is shown in the Settings only after activating the NFC.

Lockscreen

Into It has not been renewed by Google, which has preferred only make it more complete. E ‘was added a button in the lower right corner to open the camera and added shortcut keys to control the music player. There are still widgets, which can be turned on or off in Settings.

Print

Into KitKat With Android 4.4, Google introduced the Press Service that allows us to print directly to the printer via wireless network. We have already analyzed in detail this feature, so we refer to our video-focus.

Dialer and the People app

Into The Dialer application and the People have been heavily renovated by Google, both in the aspect graph of functions. We now have many more features, which we have seen in detail in our previous article.

Camera and Gallery

Into The Camera application has remained unchanged as well as the quality of photos and videos. E ‘instead improved the quality of the photosphere and new features have been introduced in the Gallery. For more details we refer to our previous article.

Hangouts and Messages

Into Hangouts With version 2.0 was introduced support for SMS and Google has removed the default messaging application from Android 4.4 KitKat. However, it is still present on the Nexus 4 and was only removed on the Nexus 5. Even if there are two applications for SMS, you can send them but only through one set as default in Settings> Other. With other messaging applications, so you can only read text messages, but not send them.

Battery

Into The battery in the short time of use, consumption seems more or less like with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, although we know that the duration depends very much on individual usage. With heavy use is, for example, dropped by 32% in 2 hours and 30 minutes, with 2 hours and 18 minutes of display lit. It seems, at least from our use, that consumes a bit ‘too much on stand-by, but nothing to worry about.

Impressions

Into Ultimately, Android 4.4 KitKat gave us some good impressions. It ‘a step forward compared to the previous version, both in terms of the functions of the optimizations. However, it is still to be improved, especially in the aspect graph, as there are parts of the interface with the new color white and others with the blue color of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. Even pulling down the notification bar, the NavBar remains transparent and this is not, in my opinion, very pleasant. A good starting point, however, especially as regards the performance of the system and the use of the RAM.

Installing Android 4.4 Launcher KitKat

Into As we said, the launcher of Android 4.4 KitKat is now exclusive to the Nexus 5, however you can easily install APK through a. In this way it is possible to obtain the same launcher Nexus 5, with Google Now accessible via a swipe to the right and with the transparent rods, although still remain in the black lockscreen. For this reason we leave our previous article where we show you how to install it.
