LG L5 II: Italian Review by Nexus-Lab - Nexus Lab (Blog)

LG L5 II: Italian Review by Nexus-Lab

LG has been very lucky with his style series in 2012, selling millions of units all over the world. The strength of these devices lies in the quality / price ratio, although some trimming on the software and hardware that has been lacking. With the second set of terminals L, LG wants to improve in every aspect, from design, display, and ending with the operating system. There will be successful?

PACK – [VOTE 7]

The packaging of the LG L5 II presents no particular surprises. At the top we find the device well protected by a plastic film and a plastic case. In the lower part we find instead of normal headphones with 3.5 jack, which have only the answer key call, so it will be impossible to raise the volume directly from these or change the music.

The charger uses the usb cable / microusb apart to connect to the device. This presents a very small structure and vertical, while the microUSB cable is rather short. The manuals are reduced to a minimum, with only a booklet dedicated to speeding up the configuration of the phone.

DESIGN – [VOTE 7,5]

LG did not want to be daring with the new L series, offering only a slightly softer design, but remain anchored to the usual style lines of your device, coming in some way to the first Galaxy S

The center key system hides a beautiful multi-color LED , which is the best aesthetic detail of the entire Korean production.

Its dimensions are equal to 117.5 x 62.2 x 9.2 mm thick. The shells are made of good quality plastic, with a textured, not in relief, which gives particular importance to the device.

On the left side is placed a dedicated key to fast operation that we will explore a few paragraphs.

To remove the back cover will need to get a grip on the hole for the connector microUSB. Unlikely we will face in broken plastic since there seem to be rather robust and lightweight, in fact, the phone weighs only 103 grams

HARDWARE – [VOTE 7.9]

  • ARMv7 CPU MT6575 single-core 1 GHz
  • 512 MB RAM
  • GPU PowerVR SGX 531
  • DISPLAY IPS 4-inch, 800 x 480 pixels, 233 PPI
  • MEMORY 4 GB expandable

Let’s start from the strong point of this terminal, the display from 4 inches with 800 x 480 resolution . In fact, if the resolution is not the highest, the display with IPS technology then you are really exceptional in all conditions, both in the direct sunlight, and with an angle of view pronounced. LG’s proprietary technology manages to not make us forget the solutions of the most renowned competition, although the low density of PPI, 233, is especially noticeable when reading.

Into Even if the amount of memory is only 512 MB, the software optimization result shows that Android 4.1.2 fluid even with a more limited hardware, driven by a single core processor is certainly not the most efficient.

Into As might be expected even before the announcement, the memory is limited to only 4 GB, specifically, they are only 2.7 GB available to the user. But we have a slot for microUSB which all ows us to increase the memory up to 32 GB, so you do not have no problem. The Sim compatible is the classic one, so no microSIM or NanoSim.

Into LG L5 II is quad band GSM (850/900/7900/1900 MHz), dual band UMTS (900/2100 MHz) and supports HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA 5.7 Mbps Finoa

SOFTWARE – [VOTE 8.5]

As announced earlier, LG has done a great job in terms of optimization , there seems to have at hand a device with only 512MB of RAM , denying all of the excuses made by other manufacturers that indicated as impossible to bear, Jelly Bean on devices with less than 1 GB of RAM.

interface which owns the South Korean giant has many interesting features. First of all the shortcut key, located above the volume rocker, dedicated to invoke an application at our option.

Among the proprietary app definitely the most interesting is represented by QuickMemo , a notebook that can be called atypical or by hot key or from the dropdown menu. The notes will be displayed in overlay, and make them stay for as long as necessary in the foreground.

The taskbar has several buttons for activation / deactivation of services or sensors, such as the rotation of the display, WiFi, bluetooth, etc..

The screen lock / release does not allow us to quickly activate any application, except for the emergency dialer. The animation to unlock the display simulates a circle that gradually widens, with a very nice and fluid.

holding down the finger on the homepage, or by clicking on the + at the top right, you are going to open the s chermata the widget manager , applications and wallpapers. Here we decide what and where to insert widget, if you change the background wallpaper, choosing between dynamic and static ones, or if directly some applications to the home page.

Another interesting app pre-installed is Safety Care, a software dedicated to our safety and our device, that among the functions can boast the automatic sending of an or more emergency communications, if for a certain prolonged period we do not use the phone.

The FM radio fortunately missing from this device, adding that promote more and especially in Italy, where the threshold of our plans are still too limited to an intensive use of the web radio.

The dialer has a rather classical, with the addition of the quick between the contacts and the ability to insert the vibration or the alarm simply by pressing and holding the # key

SMS messages can be scheduled more quickly via the “Schedule sending” while the qwerty keyboard has a classical structure, although the 4-inch display highlights the problem of the keys slightly too close to each other, since we are now accustomed to over the 4.5-inch device.

The spelling checker works smoothly, and is very close in quality and dynamic operation to stock Android.

The drawer is divided into three main categories, applications, downloads and widgets.

The navigation through the default browser (not Chrome) is pleasant, with a few pointings and fluidity almost unprecedented for a device with only 512 MB of RAM

QUALITY: AUDIO [VOTE 8] – CALLS [VOTE 8] – SIGNAL [VOTE 8]

The sound from the system is very high and also quite balanced, with high overlooking the bass only a little. With the earpiece, the situation remains similar, with a strong audio. The signal, both in 3G GSM networks, there has never disappointed even in extreme situations, showing how L5 II is an excellent phone in every point of view.

CAMERA / VIDEO CAMERA – [VOTE 7]

The 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, making bright, sharp pictures, even though in low light situation shows its limits with a lot of noise in the images darkest.

The software for the management of the shots also includes a nice feature for speech recognition, in practice if we say cheese, or another word pre-set, the phone will automatically take the picture.

The videos show most obvious limitations, mainly because of a now disused resolution, 640 x 480 pixels, which even played on the same display as the L5 II appear to be grainy and poor detail.

AUTONOMY – [VOTE 8.5]

The 1700 mAh battery , can easily lead us through the day without too much trouble. Obviously the size of the display, along with a low-power hardware, do not require a large energy consumption, our typical day with heavy use, the at 06:00 and ends at 22:00. The smartphone was able to take us to the end of the day still with 10% battery available.

FINAL COMMENT – [VOTE 7.9 (not an average) ]

LG proves to handle it with the device of medium / low, producing a L5 II from low cost (170) set to fall, with a operating system up to date and well optimized and an IPS display that does not make us regret that much those of the various top of the range.

We are facing perhaps the perfect smartphone for those who want to approach this world for the first time or for those who want to spend a fortune, even if LG could maybe a little ‘go further with the design , now really inflated by all.
